Abstract
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) is an effective alternative to waste management to reduce waste residue collected to landfill. Garbage bank is one alternative of waste management practicing 3R. Garbage banks is a program of community-based waste management with 3R concept. This research aimed to (i) to know the weight and composition of incoming waste generation, (ii) to know the potential percentage of waste generation and mass balance that is reduced through 3R, (iii) to know the social impacts and economic benefits of waste. The used method was in the form of field research to assess the solid waste reduction activities carried out by garbage banks. In this study, quantitative descriptive method was used. Quantitative methods to calculate the composition of garbage at the garbage banks, garbage that reduced by 3R in garbage banks, by the craftsmen who created variety of new items from the trash. Quantitative methods were also performed to calculate the economic value of garbage that could be reduced in order to know the potential economic value of reduction activities undertaken at the garbage banks. The data were analyzed quantitative descriptive with tables and graphs. The research result showed that the composition and weight of garbage that saved monthly to the bank 4028,77 kg/month at twenty-one garbage banks in Umbulharjo and Pakualaman Sub districts. Reduction in the activity of Reduce known from the beginning of the establishment of the garbage banks, arrange dissemination to the community about what is the garbage banks and what benefits could achieved by the community when joined as a customer or the garbage banks in the form of social mass balance analysis through Reuse and Recycle (R2 and R3), reduction through R2 shown by crafts manufacture of plastic solid waste and R3 are done by composting. Customer revenue receipts from the sale of garbage grand average of Rp 500 to Rp 10.000 monthly, for the operational costs of the garbage banks, was reduced as much as 10% until 20% from the total revenue.
